Most people like office goers prepare food in bulk and reheat, and consume them as and when they feel hungry. But Research shows that reheating some of your favorite foods can be dangerous to your health, especially if they were stored wrongly. Here we see list of some foods which should never be reheated and consumed.
Foods that should never be reheated
Mushrooms
Researchers never recommend reheating the mushrooms. Mushrooms are perishable foods and when stored improperly, they deteriorate easily and their proteins are destroyed by enzymes and microorganisms. It is always recommended only to use fresh mushrooms and also to thoroughly clean even those which look clean.
Note: If mushrooms are stored in a fridge and for not more 24 hours, it is in general no problem to reheat mushrooms again at recommended temperatures of 70 deg C.
Spinach
Spinach is loaded with vitamins (A, C, K, Folate) and minerals (calcium, magnesium) and can add to part of a healthy diet. Spinach also contains nitrates and when they are reheated again and again, the nitrates can break down to form nitrites due to organisms that are present. Nitrites can lead to methemoglobinemia, where the uptake of oxygen in the blood is adversely affected. In baby’s this is called Blue Baby Syndrome.
Nitrites can also convert into nitrosamines, if not enough antioxidants are present in the body. Nitrosamines are a known carcinogen (cancer-causing agent). This is the reason cured pork (bacon, sausages) are also sprayed with vitamin C.
Chicken
Like mushrooms, chicken meat is also rich in proteins, which when not reheated properly, creates severe digestive problems in our body. If you really want to reheat, heat it to piping hot and that all parts of chicken are really hot. Reheat only once after the original preparation. Once you have re-heated it once, eat it straight away. Instead reheating, you can eat it cold and Never ever reheat chicken more than once.
Eggs
Eggs which is high in protein is very good for health. But it should also not to be reheated. When reheated at high temperatures, it gets converted to toxic food, which is very dangerous to the digestive track and may cause vomiting or diarrhea.
Oils
Oils which have low smoke points, which when reheated become rancid. Normally oils should not be reused. At the most can use for 2 times and not above that. Try to avoid reheating the oils like grape seed oil, walnut oil, avocado oil, hazelnut oil, flax seed oil which have very low smoke points.
